Grain Scale, ca. 1915.
During the early 1900's, grain scales were used on North American farms to weigh everything from 4H livestock to grain, corn and potatoes. Today, they are fun, sought after items and quite popular as coffee tables.
The wood handles/sides are made of ash, the top is pine.
Judging by the weathered condition, this grain scale was likely stored for years in a farmer's field. The ash handles cleaned up nicely with sand paper. The top was rotting and required replacing with some old pine. The metal was cleaned with steel wool and a buffing wheel.
The wood was stained with a golden oak wood stain. Both the wood and metal were finished with varnish.
